We Are Hiring: Service Manager

Key Enterprises provide supported activities from our base in North Tyneside and within the community to adults with learning disabilities, mental health problems or acquired brain injuries. Through their involvement with us individuals develop practical skills within our working departments whilst building confidence and a sense of community. We provide a range of commercial services including bike sales, gardening and fabrication of bespoke metal and wooden items. Service users can also take part in a range of community-based activities such as bike rides, kayaking, football, music, educational trips and much more. We proudly deliver a unique service that mixes adults with differing diagnoses and complexities providing opportunities and experiences found nowhere else.

We are seeking to appoint an appropriately experienced, value driven, Service Manager to ensure the effective provision of our day service activities. The post holder will be responsible for all aspects of service user welfare and maintaining effective working relationships with relevant health and social care agencies in order to maximise the number of service users benefitting from the Service. They will be responsible for line managing an Assistant Manager as well as our team of Supervisors. Duties include but are not limited to:

Board of Trustees

  • Liaise with the Chief Executive in the preparation and submission of Board reports;

  • To be responsible for the delivery of specified aspects of the Company’s approved Business Plan and to contribute to regular monitoring reports to the Board;

  • Assist in the development of new services appropriate to the aims and objectives of the Company;

  • Provide advice and support to the Board as necessary; and

  • Report on any other matters to meetings of the Board as requested.

Service Users

  • Effectively review service user needs and to create/update records in a systematic manner;

  • Maintain and develop effective procedures for all service users;

  • Ensure that the Company meets the needs of any statutory contracts for service user support;

  • Offer on-going support to service users through practical assistance/onward referral when needed;

  • Maximise the capacity of the service by promoting the Service locally and regionally ensuring the existence of a robust pathway for referrals;

  • Liaise with and feedback to referral agencies and stakeholders involved in service users’ support/care plans;

  • Maintain an effective awareness of the changing needs of service users and liaise with the Chief Executive in formulating proposals for future development;

  • Contribute to the planning and organisation of events/activities relevant to the organisation;

  • Support staff in the production and review of risk assessments; and

  • Act as the Company’s safeguarding lead.


  • Ensure effective communication regarding service user’s support plans and treatment programmes;

  • Communicate any issues/risks to staff; and

  • Line manage the Assistant Manager and service delivery staff in line with the Company’s approved employment policies and procedures.


  • Operate under the general direction of the Company’s Board and comply with all approved policies and procedures;

  • Maintain an effective working knowledge of the Company’s policies and procedures; the legislative framework within which it operates;

  • Represent the Company, as required, at meetings or other events and to ensure that it maintains an active involvement in Mental Health and Learning Disability Services;

  • Promote the Company with the objective of attracting new service users and/or investment; and

  • Deputise for the Chief Executive as necessary.

Essential Skills

  • Suitably qualified and/or experienced and have experience within a mental health, learning disability or day service setting;

  • Knowledge and understanding of adult social care legislation and its practical application;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to communicate with a range of people, using a variety of communication methods;

  • Have experience of the application of safeguarding principles;

  • A passion for working with people and providing person-centred care;

  • Leadership and management skills including line management;

  • Experience of report writing;

  • Competent in the use of IT including Office products;

  • The capacity to work under pressure and to take a problem-solving approach to work;

  • An understanding of accountability to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements;

  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating project

Desirable Skills

  • An understanding of the role of social work, occupational health and mental health colleagues play in service user support; and

  • Knowledge of the of the voluntary sector in the region

The post holder should be prepared to undertake the appropriate training to enable them to fulfil the above duties or other duties consistent with the grade and also be prepared to work flexible hours by agreement where necessary.
