Local mental health charity's metallic T. rex comes to Life in Dino Jaws
27 July 2017

A new exhibit at Life Science Centre, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, displays the incredible metalwork skills taught by Key Enterprises – a local charity that provides training opportunities and support for people with mental health problems, learning disabilities and learning needs.

“Rex”, a 1.6-metre-tall metallic sculpture of the skeleton of a T. rex, is available for public viewing from today at Life Science Centre (Thursday 27 July), standing proudly alongside the animatronic dinosaurs in its Dino Jaws exhibition.

Linda Conlon, Chief Executive of the International Centre for Life, where Life Science Centre is based, said: “I’m happy to welcome the new addition to our dinosaur family. It’s a striking sculpture that I’m sure will be popular with our visitors. The fact that we are helping to support a fellow local charity is a bonus.”
Key Enterprises, based in Benton, North Tyneside, has been offering training to adults for 33 years in woodwork manufacture, wrought ironwork, furniture renovation, bicycle recycling, horticulture, catering and IT.

Lisa Donnalley, Operational Manager of Key Enterprises, said: “All of the items produced in the departments are real works for sale to the general public to help support the important work of the charity.

“Our metalwork department are often commissioned to create unusual bespoke items for sale – but this is our first T. rex!”

Rex will remain on display in the Dino Jaws exhibition until it is sold by Key Enterprises. The price tag for the sculpture is £800.
